April 1st 2020, a diplomatic statement was issued by Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden saying that those member states are „deeply concerned about the risk of violations of the principles of rule of law, democracy and fundamental rights arising from the adoption of certain emergency measures“. They warn that the emergency meassures shall „not restrict the freedom of expression or the freedom of the press.“
Governments across the continent have imposed severe restrictions on movement within a few weeks to contain the spread. There are legitimate concerns, that some leaders and parties are using the pandemic as an excuse to tighten control over their countries.
Why has this statement not issued by more / all EU member states?
